Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving may be a North American national holiday, but we like the idea of coming together and giving thanks for our blessings. It's a good reminder to stop and share the positives you've experienced during the year with your colleagues over a cuppa, or as an icebreaker to start your morning meeting.
Homemade Bread Day
Everyone loves the smell and taste of homemade bread! Baking bread can be seen as a symbol of our work life: investing time to make the dough and letting it rest and rise before baking. Use this day to slow down, take the time to talk to your teams, listen to their needs, and work on their development so that they can grow and be their best.
Odd Socks Day
Odd Socks Day is an annual event that encourages people to wear mismatched socks as a way of celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion. It is a light-hearted and symbolic gesture that serves as a reminder that being different is something to be proud of. People are encouraged to embrace their individuality and support others in doing the same. Use the day as an opportunity to review your anti-bullying processes, and to educate your staff about the importance of embracing diversity and promoting inclusion.
National Recycling Week
National Recycling Week is the perfect time to look at your organisation's recycling and sustainability programs. While supporting the environment is the priority, according to Planet Ark research shows that it is also good for staff morale, with three in four employees stating that workplace recycling initiatives makes them feel better about their employer. Aside from reminding staff about your existing recycling systems, try something new this year! Your company could host a Mobile Muster throughout the week with daily reminders to encourage employees to bring their old mobiles in to be recycled, which saves them from landfill. Another fun activity that offers something for everyone is running a swap party. Encourage all employees to bring in items they no longer want, like books, DVDs, CDs, clothes, toys and more, and exchange them for something they like.
Remembrance Day
Out of respect for those who died or suffered during wars and armed conflicts, today we will observe a one-minute silence at 11 am. To highlight the importance of taking part in this tradition, you can let all staff know that meetings should be scheduled around this, phone systems switched to answering machine, and any visitors given advance notice so that all staff can pause work and come together to make a point of remembering the fallen.
International Stress Awareness Week
The goals of International Stress Awareness Week are to raise awareness of stress around the world and to improve the ways in which stress is managed in the workplace and in our personal lives. These goals are reflected in this year’s theme "campaigning to reduce stress and improve wellbeing". High workload and poor work-life balance has a big impact on the productivity and mental health of your workforce. Find ways to maintain a positive work-life balance today. Share on your socials how you deal with stress.
Sandwich Day
Did you know that the most expensive sandwich ever sold was a grilled toasty that seemed to have an image of the Virgin Mary on it? It sold for USD28,000 in 2004. Luckily, here in Australia you don't need a small loan to purchase everyone's favourite lunchtime snack. Celebrate Sandwich Day in your office with an informal get-together at lunch. Order in, or ask each team member to bring in one ingredient and employees can assemble their own favourites.
Movember - Men's Health Awareness Month
Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide. Now in its 21st year, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, and it is estimated that by 2030 the rate of men dying prematurely will reduce by 25%. You can easily take part in this life-saving cause by heading to the Movember website and registering your support. Use this month to encourage your male staff to book in those vital health checks and to take care of themselves.
Halloween
Give your social media a spooky makeover with the theme of pumpkin season. Encourage your staff to share their pumpkin-themed content, and then feature their posts on your account. For the brave, host a pumpkin carving competition.
International Artist Day
For over a decade, International Artist Day has honoured the contribution that artists have and are making to society. Although today is traditionally about celebrating artists, it is important to remember that creativity comes in many forms. Creativity and innovation are especially important across all industries because business challenges require inventive solutions. Get your staff's creative juices flowing by hosting a drawing competition in the office. Post the winner's creation on your socials.
International Day of the Nacho
Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya created the original nachos in Mexico back in 1943, when a group of hungry women came in just on closing time. With no kitchen staff and very few ingredients left in the restaurant, he created the "Nacho Special" which spread to become a worldwide sensation. The best way to celebrate International Day of the Nacho in your organisation is simple: enjoy some nachos for lunch! This humble dish satisfies the masses, with its diverse range of toppings and options. Head out for traditional Mexican at a restaurant near you, or organise delivery for your team.
Boss's Day
Does your organisation have an exceptional boss who is beloved by the whole team or company? Show your appreciation for the care and hard work that they put into their team. Bake a cake to share with the team, sign a team card, or make them a quirky award to show your thanks.
World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day is all about raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilise efforts in support of mental health. Share tips with your team and on your socials on how to boost your mental health.
Instagram's Birthday
Instagram turns 24 today! Ask your team to share their favourite IG feature, and share an IG hack that everyone ought to know. Don't forget to post a photo on the app in honour today.
Do Something Nice Day
This holiday encourages us to perform acts of kindness for strangers or loved ones. Think of a compliment to pay a coworker today. Share an insight, tell someone you really appreciate their help, take on a little extra work to alleviate a colleagues to-do list, or simply share a smile and take time to listen. Even a little help goes a long way!
International Podcast Day
Today we celebrate the power of podcasts! Share your favourite industry podcasts with your team. Record yourself listening to a podcast and share what you learned on your socials.
Confucius Day
Created to honour Confucius, one of the world's greatest philosophers. In China and Taiwan, festivals and ceremonies are still held in his name on this day of remembrance. In other countries, we use this day to celebrate his teachings and the famous sayings he gave mankind. Share your favourite Confucius quote on your socials.
Ask a Stupid Question Day
It might sound like a silly theme to celebrate, but the origins of 'Ask a Stupid Question Day' are honourable. During the 1980s, a group of American teachers realised their students weren't asking questions for fear of being ridiculed. They designated a day especially for this, to encourage a safe way for their students to open up and share their curiosity with the class without fear. Could your organisation benefit from a dedicated safe space for employees who may be shy or assume their question is trivial? This can provide valuable insight into areas that may be lacking communication within the workplace and allow you the feedback you need to improve. A workplace Questions & Suggestions box can be a great way to keep this anonymous and available year-round if you feel some employees may be holding back ideas or questions and need to be further supported. Asking questions encourages us all to learn from one another and acquire new knowledge, and can open up some interesting discussions. One person's stupid question could be another person's revelation!
Working Parents Day
Today we appreciate that being a working parent is tough. Recognise and pay tribute to the employees in your organisation who are juggling it all. You can support these employees by including their perspective in your company policies and procedures, and even foster a community for them by facilitating a parents group at work where they can meet in a safe space to discuss the highs and lows and feel supported amongst like-minded colleagues with similar struggles.
Positive Thinking Day
Today we encourage positive thoughts and show gratitude for the simple things in life. Studies show that positive thinking can have a long-lasting effect on our health and wellbeing, especially when it comes to mental health. Your organisation can create a simple plan for making your employees smile and be happy today. Positive affirmations are a great start to the day. Leave a small note with a positive mindset quote or kind words of appreciation on our teams' desks for when they first walk in to start their day. You could play a fun song like Pharrell Williams' 'Happy' over the speakers and encourage everyone to get up and dance. The objective? Bring a smile and spread positivity and happiness.
R U OK? Day
If someone in your workplace is struggling with life's ups and downs, today is our reminder to ask them if they are okay. The R U OK website has some amazing resources available for your workplace to encourage you to build a culture where everyone feels safe, supported, and encouraged. They want to inspire every workplace to have an R U OK workplace champion, and offer workshops, webinars, and activities to help these champions inspire regular and meaningful conversations. You can get involved by hosting a morning tea or sausage sizzle to raise funds, or offer a lunch workshop to help employees learn strategies for self-care and understanding their own mental health, which can better prepare you to help others.
Swap Ideas Day
Today we celebrate coming together to share ideas. Collaboration fosters successful teams. By sharing concepts, new ideas evolve, and paired with other's impressions and knowledge, they can grow and create new opportunities and results. Your organisation can host a brainstorming session to encourage your employees to share and swap ideas. It could be to solve a recurring issue in the workplace, to develop a new product, or refresh an existing policy, strategy, or campaign. Bring your team together to spark new ideas and inspiration.
