Employee Recognition

What Is Employee Recognition?

Employee recognition acknowledges the accomplishments and hard work of individuals, teams and entire workforce within a company. The point is to create a bond between employees and the organisation so that everyone feels respected, valued and appreciated.

Ideally, rewards both support the work employees are doing and recognise who they are as people while staying true to company values.

What Is the Best Way to Recognise Employees?

Providing regular, timely, specific feedback is the most effective way to recognise employees. It's not enough to demonstrate appreciation to your team members once a year, instead recognition needs to be given regularly, whether that's weekly, monthly or quarterly.

6 Thoughtful Employee Recognition Ideas

Meaningful employee recognition comes in a variety of forms, both formal and informal. To ensure your people don't get jaded or find your efforts formulaic, it’s important to use a mix of recognition types.

Remember everyone is different some employees love recognition-based rewards where they're publicly thanked or mentioned on social media however, others may prefer to stay out of the limelight and appreciate lower-key rewards, like a gift card for a dinner out with family.

1. Host Your Own Regular Employee Appreciation Day.

Use this concept as a regular monthly event to show your appreciation. Create awards ceremony recognising major accomplishments or years of service.

2. Celebrate the small wins.

Team leaders and managers can take the lead and start meetings with recognition of recent employee or team wins; it’s a great way to boost the energy at the beginning of the meeting.

3. Create an employee wall of fame.

A wall of fame can be as simple as creating a space where you put up photos of employees who have done exceptionally well — include what specific action they've taken to garner this recognition. For companies that work mostly virtually, the wall doesn’t need to be physical. A page on your intranet or if appropriate external website can highlight employees for a variety of accomplishments. Encourage involvement from employees by asking them to nominate co-workers.

4. Send a card.

A handwritten thank-you note is a simple gesture that goes a long way. Receiving a card is memorable, and it’s a physical keepsake.

5. Ask your team.

Ask your employees what would make them feel appreciated.

6. Nominate your company the Australia’s Best Places to Work Study.
